László Adalbert Arany was a Hungarian linguist, teacher and ethnographer from Slovakia. From 1943 he worked as a research assistant at the Slovak Academy of Science, but in 1946 he was dismissed due to his Hungarian origin. Like many other Hungarians, Arany was also persecuted after World War II. Despite that, he became the head of an illegal movement. The movement mainly focused on the problems of the Hungarian minority in Czechoslovakia. Through the movement he met Cardinal József Mindszenty, who became his close co-worker. For his illegal work and perhaps also for his cooperation with Mindszenty, Arany was sentenced to 8 years labor. Most of this time he spent in a uranium mine.
